Free Timelapse & Hyperlapse Software (2024)

LRTimelapse, DaVinci Resolve, and AEJuice

If you're venturing into the world of Timelapse or Hyperlapse photography, having the right tools can make all the difference. Especially in the beginning, having acces to free Tools is a game changer. Today, I'll introduce you to the free version of LRTimelapse, DaVinci Resolve, and AEJuice —three invaluable tools for any Timelapse/Hyperlapse photographer.

1. LRTimelapse (Demo Version)

LRTimelapse is a powerful tool that I use almost daily for my Timelapse and Hyperlapse workflow. Whether you're a beginner or a pro, this tool can significantly speed up your post-processing with its batch processing options. It is the must-have tool for creating "Holy Grail" videos (sunsets & sunrises) where the light changes dramatically.

Here are some key features:

- Free Version Limit: The free version supports sequences of up to 400 images, making it perfect for those just starting out.

- Integrated Workflow: In the latest version, you can edit an entire sequence—from color grading to rendering the final video—all within LRTimelapse, eliminating the need for other software. The color grading options are comparable to those in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw, providing professional-level control over your footage.

- Deflicker Options: One of the standout features is the ability to remove any flicker in your sequences, ensuring smooth and consistent results.

Creating "Holy Grail" Timelapses:

The functions LRTimelapse is propably know most for. The term "Holy Grail" Timelapse refers to capturing the smooth transition of light from day to night or vice versa. This type of Timelapse can be challenging due to the drastic changes in exposure and lighting conditions. LRTimelapse excels in this area with its Holy Grail Wizard, which allows for precise control over exposure adjustments, ensuring a seamless transition without visible flickering.

Batch processing: Batch processing is a game-changer. It saves a lot of time, especially when dealing with a lot of sequences.

User Experience: Many users, including myself, have found LRTimelapse indispensable for a professional-grade Timelapse worfklow. The community often praises its intuitive interface and powerful features, particularly for handling challenging lighting transitions.

2. DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve is a renowned video editing software known for its extensive features. The free version offers a robust set of tools that are more than sufficient for Timelapse and Hyperlapse editing.

Key Features:

- Stabilizer: The speed and efficiency of the stabilizer are remarkable, though it may not work perfectly for all hyperlapse shots. It is excellent for correcting minor shakes and creating smooth motion in your footage.

- Deflickering: This feature helps smooth out the variations in exposure, a common issue in timelapse photography.

Using DaVinci Resolve for Timelapse Editing:

DaVinci Resolve stands out for its advanced color grading tools and the fact the basic version is free. While it may not be the first choice for Timelapse creation, its powerful features make it valuable especially for beginners.

Advanced Techniques:

- Node-Based Workflow: DaVinci Resolve’s node-based workflow allows for more complex adjustments and effects. This system is highly flexible, enabling you to create intricate color grades and visual effects.

- Fusion Tab: For advanced users, the Fusion tab provides powerful tools for creating visual effects and motion graphics. Integrating these effects can elevate your Timelapse videos to a new level.

My personal highlight:

What impressed me the first time I used DaVinci Resolve was the speed of the stabilizer. It only took seconds to stabilize an 8K Hyperlapse, where in Adobe After Effects it can take minutes. However, there is a downside: The stabilization does not work for all of my Hyperlapses. But if you know how to properly create Hyperlapses that will work in DaVinci it will reward you with amazing results.
